Sometimes you have to look deeper
I once knew a girl her skin lovely yet ashen
Her life seemed amazing she always had the latest fashion
It was later I saw the cuts on her wrist
She noticed I saw and yelled and threw fists
I let her do so until she calmed down
I wondered why she was so unhappy,
she was the most popular girl in town
She began to tell me about her plight
Of how often her parents would fight
I listened as she cried away her misery
And thought of how sad she was and how no one could see
I hugged her and she looked at me in surprise
"I don't know you too well but I know you're too kind to die"
She hugged me back and smiled
"Thank you. It was nice of you to listen, though my problems are mild"
I looked at her "No problem is mild."
"Someone may have it worse but that doesn't mean you don't have it bad"
In that moment the girl seemed much less sad
We said our goodbyes and walked away
Now the girl seems lighter, brighter, and happier each day
Her life seemed amazing she always had the latest fashion
It was later I saw the cuts on her wrist
She noticed I saw and yelled and threw fists
I let her do so until she calmed down
I wondered why she was so unhappy,
she was the most popular girl in town

And thought of how sad she was and how no one could see
