a toast to the new poor

my buddy at work
recently saw a program about Moses,
and decided he wanted to chat.

His name is Scott
he is about 55,
and his last 4-5 years
have been a revelation
in the instability of things,
for him.

Raised not quite rich,
but fed well enough
to believe in the American Dream,
I can imagine he might have shed a tear
when the fireworks
shown just right
over the stars n stripes
on the July nights
of his youth.

He has good ethic
and genuine zeal,
joined the Air Force
traveled, married and in between
got good at Golf.
Good enough to go pro,
not Tiger Woods T.V. star pro,
but pro enough to teach
the powdered asshole rich
how to shake their sticks.

Things were good.

Then yada yada,
2008
Middle Class disappeared

shit mattered.

He now slings steaks and beer
to the working class
alongside me

(you know your "working class"
if you laugh at the folks that talk about
retirement,insurance,stocksbondsfunds
disposable motherfucking income,
that stuff)

and I at 33
seem to offer a slant
that Armed Forces,
marriage,golf and a Universe
that makes sense

couldn't.

I am the first
non-"other"
(I matter)
that's thinks it's ok
to abandon a god,
that seems like a jerk.
