ODE TO REEVA STEENKAMP
She seemed so full of life and fun,
Her gold hair and smile shone like sun,
Making a picture few would shun.
The news of her killing did stun,
Reportedly by lover’s gun.
(Courts will hear more what he had done.)
No more across the screens she’ll run;
For her, the next life has begun.

I wonder if Reeva was just another ordinary young woman and if her boyfriend was not the first person to overcome millions of odds to become a triumphant runner. I wonder if we would see this as a tragedy somewhat like Shakespeare would have written. South Africa has one of the highest rates of female abuse that goes past socioeconomic lines. If the people were ordinary..would they have been on the news?

I was saddened to read of this and also to see pictures in the newspapers - she looked so much like a woman I know at work who is quite popular (was dancer, is part-time night club manager), a person of both beauty and brains. Ironic that Reeva, I have since read, was a campaigner against domestic violence and aspiring lawyer.

I read she had locked herself in the bathroom...I never knew burglars did that...unless, they wanted their privacy...

Believe it or not (I know it's often not the case as many distressed victims can tell me), burglars sometimes use bathrooms. (I read of court case in England where one was caught by using one in the house he burgled - flushed out so to speak.)
Also bathrooms can be excellent in-out ways for burglars - they are usually boltable from inside, which can aid getaway.

It is very sad case with no winners and I trust to the South African justice system to get to the bottom of it they are not stupid and will ascertain the truth, I'm sure they will.
