Echoes of a Stranger

Echoes in my ears

Shadows in my memory

“…distracted by your beauty…”

A faint smile in my reflection

A 40 something man in a ute

Black as his intentions

Sleek as his approach

“…it’s all about the woman…”

A hand through my hair

A whisper in my ear

“…a peek under your skirt?..”

A young drama student

Played her character well

“…you’re a good girl…”

Innocent angel spreads her wings

Seems she’d forgotten how to fly

“…you’re sure I can’t tempt you?..”

“…maybe just to Garden City…”

Nice enough, he opened my door

My boots step towards oblivion

“…be pampered all day…”

Small talk and a 5 o’clock shadow

Stripy stockings and a garter belt

“…a bit shy are you?..”

Maybe the boots made him think I was a cheating whore

Maybe I’m just not the actor I thought I was

“…take you away where no one will know…”

A silent wish to get lucky

A silent prayer for safety

“…luckiest man in the world…”

I took his business card

My act had fallen through

“…call me…”

I ached all over

My fall from grace had been higher than expected

I was finally free in the arms of love-bred silence…
