When You Thought You Were A Roach
I always wanted to tell you
how I was once just as you,
despite how much younger
I am than you, always in
the dark to see the sunset,
staring at the stars and moon,
the brown-orange glow of the sky
behind city lights,
the road under my feet
and music in my head.
I've been through all
the phases of a teenager,
been in all the types pain,
happiness, but not pleasure.
I've been in love, and hate,a
nd indifference. When I look at you,
I see a kindred spirit, a friend
I couldn't bear to lose.
I see someone I love
on one level or another.
I have to admit my jealousy
(why keep it a secret?)
over your current girl. She's beautiful,
bore you a beautiful child,
seems perfect, and I hope the two of you
are always happy together.
At least, I try to believe in my hope.
You're a wonderous man, my friend.
You will do many things for many people,
and your movement will take you far.
I'll do as much as I can for you
no matter where you are.
Just don't forget me,
nor the places you've come from,
the horrors you've witnessed,
that I have through you.
They make you who you are.
And you are beautiful in all truth
and meaning. Something I guess I could never
be for you. My brother, go far into the world,
farther than you have already been,
and pave your way with the golden bricks
your steps leave behind.
I'll be content with my brown carpet
and the little mem'ries I can never find.
Thank you for showing me a new light,
a twinkling candle in infinite darkness
where my sun can no longer rise.
Thank you for showing me new music
to which my heart can sing
(since my voice is useless).
Thank you for being a firefly
when you thought you were a roach.
