An American Scream

I too, have seen the greatest minds of my generation destroyed by madness.
Feral giants locked in cages,
For simply living on that blood stained ground,
Filled with the junkies, whores, Madonnas and poets
Fucking because if feels good
     I’ve shook the bars
           And lost my mind
Gnawed at the spines of my enemies and friends,
Lived on the bones of the past
Soared so high
     To fall so far
Just to end up here
Surrounded by the filth of a generation lost and scared
Crawling on glass to a God they don’t know
     Bleeding Hallelujah
Waiting for that one set of footprints
     And that eternal nod

Our souls will walk these streets for a thousand years
     Looking for that fix
           We never found
                 In life
Long after the souls of mere mortals have crossed that ivory road
     We will be the ghosts
The same as when we were alive
Shadow people
The kind any sane man would never look in the eye
For fear of seeing what he really is
Nothing
We
      The Doomed
     Already know
So we scream from rooftops at the rising sun
     Knowing the night is over
Suffering the day as vampires behind closed shades
Scribbling madness to Gods whose names have been lost on the wind
Blowing through the sands of eternity
And landing on the lips of children
Because they know
     Everything is real
The way only a child can

So I surrender
     With all the futility
Of a man who knows his madness

And that we are
     The Doomed
