All Your Lessons
While living with you
I have learned much.
You've taught me
all you know
just as a father should.
I learned how to search the web
for seemingly obscure facts and dates.
I've learned to ignore the bullies
because their opinion doesn't matter.
I learned many great things
You've taught me much.
I know how to get interested
in most classes.
I know how rewarding it is
to face a foe in a tournament.
Yes, you've taught me all you know.
You taught me to reason
and with that I was able
to reassemble my computer.
You've taught me to hold my own,
and to argue logically.
But some of the things I learned
You'd rather I not know.
I know not to turn to you
for a sympathetic ear.
I know that you usually say no
because you aren't sure.
I know that Mom will listen
and you will preach.
I learned from you
how to speak to adults
and in the span of seconds,
you also taught me
children do not deserve respect.
You taught me to use my mind,
but you always say that I am wrong.
You taught me to cook
but say that I never do it right.
Yes, you've taught me well Father.
I know much about the world
and about you.
You taught me book smarts
street smarts
and family smarts.
But the most lasting lesson
from you to me
is to be disappointed in myself.
