A Letter
Got an odd letter today
from an unknown source,
someone who sent a full sheet
of blank paper
except for a singular
handmade circle
written with a red felt tip pen.
In the center
of this circle
a smudge of some kind,
and at the bottom right
of the page
a set of lipstick prints.
I tried to test the spot
to see what it was,
and it seemed
to have a certain scent,
something earthy
and yet delectable.
I could not
put my finger on it,
but in fact I felt driven
to put much more
than that on in
into it again and again.
I have no idea
what came over me.
All I know is that
all morning long
I sat at my morning coffee,
unable to figure out
much of anything,
sniffing that spot
over and over,
looking out the window,
and wanting
that pair of lips.
