This Is Not America

Since the last time the country elected a president
my status has slightly changed
still to the left of most Americans
but no longer a Democrat in name

I say that only because I would like to think
I am able to be a bit objective with this view
for those who examine the political world
what I am saying is nothing new

The Republicans abandoned even Reagan
give him credit even if not liking his policies
he preached inclusion, a big tent theory
and could laugh with those he disagreed

The change may have been triggered with Atwater
Bush the first's number one attack dog
slandered and bad mouthed Kitty Dukakis
yup Michael's campaign was left in a fog

Feelings of guilt so panged him
before he died he had to express his regret
some thought he was one of kind
but whoa we hadn't seen anything yet

For Rove was his number one disciple
and he served up all kinds of vitriolic hate
Bachmann, West, Issa, and Palin
attacked as soon as they got out of the gate

Democrats in Congress were unamerican
an investigation was due
who cares if there wasn't anything to the charge
waste taxpayer money that is nothing new

So if asked what is a recipe for the future
I would start with tolerance and diversity
not pick the next in line to run for president
more entrenched white guys as far as the eye can see

Romney, McCain, Bushes, Dole, Reagan, Ford, and Nixon
do you really want me to go on
the electorate has many layers
embrace it all and enjoy the dawn

Not meaning you lose your principles
but not denigrate views not the same
for the perfect policy has never been crafted
is mudslinging worth it for a bit of fame?

And I am not saying the Democrats are innocent
just look at all the money spent
for advertising on the public airwaves
public yet we aren't getting one cent

Media giants who entertain rather then inform
more resources to do what they do
"Dirty Laundry" is what they are after
quality news so sparse and so few
