I Brought You Roses Today
Today I rode on the train with a dozen red roses in hand
Making quite a sensation on the northbound train heading home
Women gazed at me with warm smiles, some of them longing
The men checked their calendars making sure that it wasn't a day that they shouldn't have forgotten
A old man next to me asked jokingly "Oh no, what did you do?"
Another asked me if it was our anniversary or your birthday
To both of them I answered in turn, "nothing" and "no, no it isn't"
Leaving them both befuddled and bewildered
"Then why the flowers?" I was asked, even though the question was a bit prying
Shrugging my shoulders I replied "just because" and smiled
What happened next truly astounded me and still does
All the women got it while the men didn't have a clue
Now to be honest, if the shoe was on the other foot
I cannot truly say if I would have sided with the women or the men
Of course the train ride was painfully slow as I waited
Occasionally sniffing the red bouquet in green wax paper planted on my lap
Finally I got home, blossoms behind my back
Presenting them to you as your face beamed with happiness
As you kissed me, I had to ask "Do you know why I brought you roses?"
And of course you got it right, "Because my husband, you're the man I fell in love with"
