Stream of Consequence
Fifteen, he loved the river, came between things in life
During troubles he found pebbles to fling in strife
Alone, he skipped rocks across the stream's surface
Seemed worthless but one stone had unseen purpose
Hit an egg in the river bed, delivered, led
Away. Bigger fishes would have quivered; fled!
Shivers, dread! An adult trout came for dinner; fed.
The rest of his litter dead; this salmon would live instead
Lone survivor none the wiser, never tense cries
Honed desire, feasting, developed to immense size
Hence prized, over years he became the king of kings
In countless places; rivers, lakes, springs and things
Until one day; he found a trout egg floating idly
His mouth open widely, then shortly, closing slightly
A small meal portion, except he started to feel torsion
Yanked toward shore in an odd style, real foreign
Strange, but he was caring less until; pain, tearing flesh
Glaring fresh, struggled to escape in despairing stress
Tried it's best but pulled out from the water, a scary mess
Air impairing breath, looked into eyes, there, staring, death
A giant king salmon in his arms he struggled to fight the thing
The boy, nineteen, shaven quite clean, excitement heightening
Finally he prevailed, a nearby hiker was derailed
A girl, eighteen, figure of a great queen, begged please tell!
Her interest was so great it became a slow date
Talked for the rest of the day, evening, night; so late
Didn't know she would be his soul mate, a twist of fate
What he did years ago when that egg shifted states
The future of actions cannot be seen in confidence
It all rests on a stone's throw in the stream of consequence
During troubles he found pebbles to fling in strife
Alone, he skipped rocks across the stream's surface
Seemed worthless but one stone had unseen purpose
Hit an egg in the river bed, delivered, led
Away. Bigger fishes would have quivered; fled!
