Shattered Life in the Future

It is the year 2089 and I am 78 years old.
Earth has been nuked to hell, a real sight to behold.

Earlier though, I suffered from a terminal sickness.
My family cared so they hired the best of the best, with quickness.

My sickness lost the battle and I felt fine.
But the extreme treatment made me go comatose for a long time.

The last thing I saw was my daughter's face.
Now I'm awake, 46 years later, and she is without a trace.

I woke up in a bomb shelter east of the original hospital I was in.
A man was at my side who introduced himself as Vinn.

He took my wallet and stared at my family photos before his introduction.
This man was not alright upstairs for his mouth could barely function.

He stuttered a lot when he spoke when he could speak
and you could tell that his sanity was at its peak.

He told me what had happened, the outside world is destroyed.
No more stores, homes, neighbors, or places to be employed.

He brought up my family suddenly during our talk
and mentioned the picture of me and my daughter going for a walk.

I ignored this because I knew he had looked at the photos before I woke up.
He mentioned his family but then he started mumbling depressing statements and wouldn't shut up.

"We are the last of our race," he said
as he was tearing up and shaking his head.

He had explained that a nuclear war was taken worldwide
making it impossible for the innocent to hide.

Everything outside the shelter was riddled with bones and debris
nothing alive outside but a small tree.

I remember my child wearing a heart charm I gave her.
I had to find my family. But where to? I wasn't sure.

As I tried to exit the shelter, Vinn put me to a halt.
After a brief pause he shattered to his knees while crying "I'm sorry! It wasn't my fault!"

"What are you sobbing about?" ,said I to him, in a concerned tone.
He screamed "Just like me you are alone! You are alone!"

I shook him off and was about to open the shelter doors
until he put his hand in his pocket with great remorse.

Vinn had pulled out the heart charm my daughter had!
I lunged and pinned him to the wall and screamed "Where the hell did you get that?!".

His face teared up more than ever before,
he looked me in the eye and said "Please, for your sake don't open that door."

My mind went into shock and I took my screaming and cries to God.
Vinn only looked at me and gave me a solid nod.

The year is 2089 and I am 78 years old.
I am now putting my sanity and my poetry on hold.
