Muscle against Murmur

I heard a play at three in the morning
A woman's voice, wavering, unsure
as it sidestepped leaf and cobweb
to my bedroom window
moving nothing

She feels the space - room to move
There's time yet, and silence to push through
The voice experiments a little
leaving murmuring behind
toying with soft cajoling
like a pup who whimpers and dances
dust on her chain
choking herself - the pain of entrapment
made cruelly, unnecessarily sharp
in the desire for release
the desire for freedom

Leaves jostle leaves
cobwebs shiver
time is still
silence is sacrificed to it
as she pushes further
on and on
the voice climbs, intensifies
becomes a spiraling whine

Surer in volume, twisted in angst
as it rushes forth
like the dog against the limits of a chain
knowing the inevitability of the head
snapped
back
flipped full-face
desperate for an inch of gained ground

The woman is lost
to her whining now
Leaves are whipped and thrashed bout
by her howling
ripped through, as all becomes confusion
unseeing panic
a hurricane

I hold my breath
as I witness the eye of the hurricane
turn upon her
His eye
"I'll peel you back again if you don't shut
your fucking FACE!!"

Leaves are stilled
cobwebs slackened
the morning returns to quiet
and left to rest
The dog's tail drooped now
dragged low
as she turns three times, lies down
sighing
solitary whisper

The woman pulls her shattered body inside herself
for a time
then
slowly reaches out a murmur
and another, to him
Feels the silence to be pushed through
and the second act begins
in the leaves and cobwebs
outside my bedroom window
at three in the morning
