The Cost of Friendship

I did not lend an ear
When you needed me the most.
I lent you my bleeding heart
As you wept shards of pain.

I did not hold my sharp words back
When you needed to drown in noise.
I sat with you for long summers
As we laughed off our problems.

I did not knock on your door
When you needed to be alone.
I gazed at winter's icy touch
As my mind drifted to you.

I did not speak to you for hours
When you needed soothing silence.
I lay on the sparkling grass with you
As the stars shone against the dark.

I did not get a thank you
When you could smile again.
I watched as you leave me alone
As my troubles haunted me.

I did not protest against you
When you talked about your success.
I listened to the stories with deaf ears
As I could only dream of such happiness.

I did not comfort you
When failures fluttered on your lips.
I heard the riches crumble to dust
As I bit my raging tongue.

I did not know the cost
When I first opened up to you.
I gave you my throbbing heart
As your boots stomped on it.
