Attack of the Dead Men

Władysław sits in his studio
The red paint on his fingers triggers a memory
Remembering that battle from a long time ago
As if one day it’d be captured in a documentary

Poland 1915

The Russians successful guarded the fortress
For months the enemy had put on pressure
So early one morning on a windy August
The Germans resorted to extreme measures

They released poisonous gases in their direction
A mix of chlorine and bromine would kill them all
The Russians did not have any sort of protection
And they would mostly likely die without any brawl

After a few hours the Germans made their advance
Bodies lay on the ground dead from poison gas
And as they made their way into Russian territory
They saw something rising from the burned grass

Russian soldiers were coming toward them
Like the undead with rage while on the attack
Their skin peeling off and vomiting blood
Left the Germans in horror and turned back

The German soldiers retreated in mass panic
Breaking their ranks, getting caught in their wires
The Russians advancing while vomiting their lungs
Dying a horrific painful death as they fired

The wounded commandant gave Władysław command
And the Russians held it a few more days
Władysław also wounded lost a leg and an arm
With a memory that would never be erased

After ten days the fortress was eventually overtaken
The Russians retreated as they could no longer defend
But the courage of those who fought while dying
Is now known as the attack of the dead men
