No Plan

I won't ask for a plan,
Who I am, or who I'll be,
For tomorrow is a shadow,
A dream not yet to see.

I've glimpsed a few futures,
But they slipped through my grip,
Like wood drifting down a stream,
Carried by unseen hands.

If you're not careful, boy,
I might become a logjam,
Caught in your river forever,
Tangled in your thoughts.

So stand still with me and admire
The random art on the walls
Of casino halls,
Where time is both fleeting and small.

No, I'll never ask for love,
Or late-night calls to my door,
Life's too short to dream of a future,
When the past is already worn.

The best plan is no plan,
To wander, to drift, to be—
For in the flow of nothing,
There's everything you can see.
