the space before surrender

the keys beneath my fingers lie cold
they always do…don’t they?
til life breathes thru them
coaxin out melodies that dance
on the edge of existence

I had say to play
to drown out the world’s noise
but found myself lost
starin deep into the piano’s surface
beyond my own reflection
into the depths of nothinness

isn’t that the way of it?
we search for meanin
only to find ourself face to face
with the infinite void
of our crowded minds

last night was…difficult
that’s the word we are meant to use
isn’t it?…difficult
strange how language crumbles
when the truth cuts too deep
to give it a name

the urge the vanish pulses
whispers of escape echoin back at me
I turn to what I know
return to those cold keys
let my hands hover
trapped in suspension
between action and surrender

not in defeat
but in defiance
where I stare into nothin
for awhile longer
til the keys finally warm
beneath my touch
