All Through The Night

“Hold you in my arms
Keep you safe from all harm
All through the night”

Those words above are the beginning of a song called, All Through The Night. The very first words of mine put to music. That’s right folks, my first song ever.

Before I tell you this story, I have a special announcement. Our very own, Fia Naturie, interviewed me on a special episode of SpotLight. If you didn’t know about it, well now you do. lol.

It’s our voices, there is nothing to read. Fia, was my first guest on the show. She came up with the idea to record the show, host it and interview me. It’s on her page here at DU. So check it out, folks.

I bring up the interview because on the speed round questions, one of them was the first song I wrote. Which brings us all up to speed, now were on the same page again. Or at least I’m back on track.

The words are from my seventeen year old brain. So I’m very green and rough around the edges at this point in life. I’m not a fan of a lot of my early work, but these words started my first song.

J.J. Burton, who I first mentioned in a write here on DU called: Twas The Night Before A DeadLove Concert. I also mentioned my brother, Garrett, though he’s not in this one.

DeadLove was a thrash band in design with some other influences sprinkled in. So do you now see the irony in these lyrics? Doesn’t sound very metal does it? In fact it might have kinda of a ballad vibe going on.

What happened was this, J.J. and I skipped school and wrote our first song. In the basement of my parents house, while they were at work of course.

While the band name is my brother and I’s last name. J.J. is a co-founder of the group. And the very first person who thought I was talented. He believed in me, and saw something in me, I didn’t see at the time. He thought I could write, and said I had potential.

Here’s the skinny, our first song was a ballad out of circumstance. We skipped school, so were trying not to get caught. We’re drinking beer, another reason to avoid being found out.

Truant officers have knocked on doors before, just saying. So an acoustic ballad was what needed to happen. Only thing is, J.J., didn’t own an acoustic guitar. Sounds like a dilemma right?

There is always a remedy to a problem. He just played his coveted Ibanez electric guitar, through his Marshall amp. Low volume, clear channel, a little reverb, we were set.

I just sang over top the guitar, which was audible, but very little volume. J.J. came up with a guitar riff and helped me with the vocal melody. I was writing the lyrics on an old legal pad. Adding more lyrics as we continued constructing verses.

Then we wrote a chorus and so forth. These words are the first thing I sung. As I lightly sang, I was wincing while waiting for the headstock of the Ibanez to poke me in the ribs. Because of how I’m spilling power-ballad lyrics.

It never happened, he just nodded his head, to continue. He even added some lyrics to the bridge later on, of the same flavor. Shockingly. lol. It took us three hours to complete, didn’t help we had to stop every fifteen minutes, to see if we heard any knocking, or a car door shut.

J.J. is metal dude through and through, I mean heavy variety, he’s not a heart and flowers kinda guy. He went along with writing this song, because we were on a roll.

It was never meant to be on a demo, or performed. It was to be a hidden secret in DeadLove lore. Yet it was the first song ever written by, J.J. and I. Though if you had asked him back in the day about this song. He would deny it existed.

He’s loosened up over the years, at least I hope he has. Or it could piss him off that these words were ever uttered. Oh, well. Hope you folks are good at keeping secrets. I’ll just never mention this to him next time he calls me.

Author's Note
Late night musing. Just thought I'd share the story of co-writing my first song. By the way J.J. and I still talk to this day. Unlike the other guy I mentioned before who writes songs not to share them. Appreciate you.
