The Second Wife

I wanted her, but I was married, and fucked up in the head. I cheated on my first wife all the time, but with her, my second wife, I couldn’t even look away. The toughest thing you’ll ever do is to love someone dying of cancer— Honestly, I could never do that again, he said, his voice shaking, his eyes searching the past.
"I knew in my heart I was meant to be with her, For the rest of her life, even though she wouldn’t be here for the end of mine." Misty-eyed, he spoke, and as he showed me pictures of her, I saw it in her eyes—those beautiful blue eyes, the kind you never forget.
It took me six years to get her number, he went on, By then, I was long divorced, but I still felt like I had to work
on myself— So I never called her. I ended up dating another girl for ten months, But after we broke up, I found myself in the same casino where it all began. And low and behold, who was there working? But her.
I thought she would have forgotten me, but nope— As soon as she saw me, she said, "You never called me." You could tell, she was everything to him, the reason his soul still ached. She was the love of his life, and what they had was rare, She would forever have his heart, no matter who he got with.
I gave him a huge hug, and as if he had an epiphany, he said, “You know, I think why I loved her more than my first wife, Is because I could tell my first wife, ‘If there’s a fire, and I pass out, go save yourself,’ She’d follow those directions. But her—she wouldn’t listen. She’d find a way to get me out of that fire, or she’d die trying. She couldn’t just leave me behind.”

Author's Note
I can't take much credit because these are the words of the man telling the story word for word.

According to research, studies show that men are significantly more likely to leave their wives after a cancer diagnosis, with some studies indicating a six-fold increase in separation or divorce rates when the wife is the one diagnosed with cancer compared to when the husband is diagnosed; meaning women are much more likely to be left by their partners in such situations.
