I Saw My Corpse

I saw it everywhere I went,
Haunting my life,
A lure inviting me
To seek relief.

I saw it dismembered,
Lifeless and broken,
Beneath the big rig,
Lost pieces scattered beyond repair.

I saw it inert,
Drowned, inhaling water,
Pulled down the dark,
Sunken deep, far from saving.

I saw it ashen,
Amidst a red, clotted lake
With a knife held close,
Slipping into slumber, beyond awakening.

I saw it fallen,
From the steep peak
Into the hollow chasm,
Absorbed by the abyss, out of sight.

I saw it torpid,
Swallowed by poison
Infiltrating every organ,
Ingested in havoc, beyond cure.

I saw my corpse,
I wondered if it felt anything at all,
Whether or not
Death was freeing.
