October Poems 2024
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 31
it is finished!
my days of reckless dalliance are gone,
as on the edge of ancientness i stand
to welcome, from the mist, a soberer dawn,
whence infidelity is strictly banned.
my restless pen has found a nobler ink
for every parchment worthy of its merit;
it supersedes pedantic mental quinque,
to bless the page on which i would confer it.
my stormy fights with youth phenomena,
upon daredevil precipice and cliff,
i now consider gross anathema,
dull to the senses as a faceless glyph.
my struggles with political ambition,
artistic zest, and flares of intellect
have quieted upon a fertile mission
born of benevolence and self-respect.
the sum of all my days upon this planet
no more by apathy shall be diminished:
to beg, i am ashamed; grovel, i cannot;
yet shall i never quit till it is finished!
