October Poems 2024
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 28
and dream this is a dream
i cannot seem to go another mile,
but i will struggle on, till fully spent
of all my sweat and tears and mercantile.
the arrows that i daily circumvent
are undeterred by stealth or camouflage;
yet, if i could just make it to the bend,
i’d get beyond the infernal sabotage
with which by night and day i must contend.
but what if i could reach the river pass,
and drag myself across the bamboo bridge:
could not i softly slither on the grass
until i’m swallowed by the mountain ridge?
the hungry wolves gain quickly on my heels,
bloodthirsty for my last-shred legacy:
open, pale future, hear my faint appeals;
rescue my soul from this dark odyssey!
if i could make it to pimento grove
(a hundred steps), before i lose my breath,
i’d sit where once i sat with one i loved,
and dream this is a dream and not real death.
