Laboring in Love

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. Ecclesiastes

Lost in their intimate embrace of flesh with flesh,
Kyle’s mind wandered.
The words of Ecclesiastes whispered in his ear.
There was labor and there was love,
and in this sacred moment,
they were one and the same.

Kyle saw something pure
in the way Faith’s eyes narrowed
with honest effort much like he’d seen
when she ran the 100-meter sprint earlier that day.
She was indeed finding joy in living with all her might.
Now, with the fierce grace of an athlete,
Faith surrendered to the rhythm of an older event.
Her face contorted in earnest effort, glowed
with an innocent joy.

Moments before Faith's hands held tightly to Kyle’s shoulders
but now they fell palms-up to her spread thighs as if in surrender.
She leaned forward like a child in prayer.
Kyle felt her modest weight
rising and falling more slowly now.
Kyle heard a hushed chant from Faith's lips
but barely audible.
“God…k…k..Kyle….coming…”
