Image for the poem path beyond genocides

path beyond genocides

sun bleeding sunset
awakens this caravan
I sat beside her

She speaks in Persian gardens
guardian guest living
quenching quest

where love is the only way to remember
I was among them stitching ruffled riddles
hidden in each hemmed dress

once a wagon a wheel
look into these moth like eyes
tell me wind
Sinti
you are my mother

kite like we leave
as we share a brew
I see her in circles

in waves as we speak
I listen to each word
falling from her painted lips

sister my sister
Sinti
within curled smoke
her cigarette weaves
smoke signals

our grandmothers sit
in kindled flames
and we listen
