Entering the Storm - Unlikely Church #5

Jake entered Sarah’s apartment and gave Sarah a quick kiss as they laughed at their awkwardness.

Sarah stepped over to her refrigerator and said, “I need some water. Would you like a glass before we go?”

“Yes,” said Jake.

As Sarah turned, Jake noticed her soft puppy-like eyes opened wide as if focused on everything.

“Thank you,” Jake said taking the glass.

“Staying busy with school helped me cope with not seeing you for a whole week but it’s been hard,” she said feeling her face redden with a blush at her boldness.

Jake smiled and said, I’ve missed you too.

Her eyes drifted down to Jake’s belt and quickly back to his face, but she knew he’d seen her wayward glance.

Jake looked carefully into Sarah’s eyes, amazed by their clarity. They almost sparkled.

Sarah said, “You know that scripture you sent to me?”

“Yes,” said Jake.

Sarah’s eyes looked toward the ceiling as she quoted, “Let us find salvation in the present moment. This one single life is all there is.”

As Jake looked into Sarah’s eyes, he saw tears forming at the corners and her lips were tight and straight until she spoke.

“Do you believe that, Jake?”

Jake hesitated. “Yes, I do,” he said. “This is all that we have but it really is enough. You—exactly as you are—are complete, and enough for this life.”

With Jakes words, it was as if a dam gave way in Sarah’s chest. She fell into him with arms wrapped around his back crying softly.

“I didn’t mean to make you cry,” Jake said.

“No, I’m crying because so much of the old me is falling away and so much new is filling that space.”

Sarah stood back and grabbed Jake’s arms as if she were about to shake him. “I’ve never thought I was enough for this life. I’ve never realized what a gift this life is.”

Within minutes, Sarah and Jake found themselves engulphed in a thunderstorm that struck from a silent sky, filling the room with electricity. As their lips met, the heavens broke open, and the downpour of their longing drenched them both. Each kiss was like another gust of blowing rain until they were drowning in the wonderful deluge that washed over their forms.

Sarah was very much aware of the very moment a surprising warm firmness slipped inside of her.. She blushed red-faced as she realized what was happening, but her legs spread with grace and full acceptance. As Jake found his rhythm in Sarah, she felt like she was entering a state of prayer. But unlike any past prayer, it wasn’t so much an appeal to a creator as it was holding to the moment and being fully present without having to fully understand it.

Sarah felt a prayer of thanksgiving, for the warmth and kindness she felt in the mass of Jake’s flesh rising away and falling gently into her. Each of his returns like a gift from eternity.

Whispered words were lost in the howling of the storm. Sarah heard herself say, “I love you,” but she knew Jake hadn’t heard. Moments later, Sarah was startled to hear a child-like voice whimpering in cadence with each of Jake’s downward thrusts. The voice was hers. She blushed and, for a moment, and felt as if she was observing from a distance. She imagined her deceased mother with hands on her hips saying, “Sarah, you’ve got some serious repenting to do.”

Sarah shook her head and returned to the present moment. She wouldn’t repent for being human. She wouldn’t apologize for being a woman living her life and enjoying the kindness of Jake’s love.

As Jake’s earnest movement continued, Sarah fell back into the present, imagining herself falling every down into a beautiful cloud filled sky that held her suspended in light. The crescendo of their love making continued until finally, bolts of pleasure streaked through the darkness of their embrace, settling in her core in a mysterious trembling that she realized was her first orgasm.

As the storm began to lift, Sarah and Jake realized where they were. Jake looked into Sarah’s eyes and then kissed the beads of sweat on her forehead. They felt changed by the storm and remained still in its aftermath, rain-soaked and exhausted. In the silence, their breaths became the gentle breeze of promises not spoken. Their naked bodies spread across Sarah’s bed were like the earth, quenched and basking in the peace.
