Nice Guy Chronicles IV

Two of my friends and I
Had decided to get together
We would go out later
But in the afternoon
We decided to have a braai (barbeque)

It was near the end of the year
And each of us had to go 'home' soon.
It was like a farewell event
Each of us knew we'd be entering
The bigger world now

As a strange turn of events
On that very day we ran into 3 girls
How this happened is that
two of us went on an alcohol run
Then when we got back,
my one friend was standing with a girl
This was a complex estate,
so as much as you're having a 'private' event
Anyone near by was privy to the situation.

We all did our introductions
Following this she left for a while
Until later when she returned with two of her friends.

As if there was some unspoken school yard pick, everyone chose who they'd entertain for the afternoon

Conversations, food and alcohol ensued...

Right after the sun said it's goodbyes
I found myself on the phone calling someone else
'Drunk brain, sober thoughts' they say

'hey I'm in your area right now
Just send me your location
And I'll be there'

In an anticlimactic fashion she responded

'well I really can't right now'

'I'm leaving tomorrow so it's a now or never situation'

Her tone still low

'I really can't right now, you see the thing is
I just found out that I'm pregnant'

Not knowing whether her news is good or bad, I found myself being quiet for a second there.

Then I found myself breaking the ice:

'Well you better name him.....'

She giggled and her tone picked up

'It's too early to know the gender'

'Well I can just tell these things you know'

After this my body remembered that
it has alcohol in its system
Everything became gibberish
Everybody had a laugh

I was happy for her,
she had finally gotten a stable life
A loving partner and close knit circle
In a weird way I had now become the outlier
Choosing career over current comfort

I had ignored the situation in front of me
In order to make this one call
However it was like she needed a good laugh to add some light to her news

A part of me knew that this would be the last time I was truly ever there for her

Our paths were now heading in different directions
