august heat

in the heat of evening near dusk
I sat outside watching my little pup
patrolling the corners of the yard
before darkness swallowed it up

something caught her senses
a tentative paw at a grassy spot
finally flipping on her side
and rolling in who knows what

caused me to wonder
what’s so irresistible that when it hits
you have the uncontrollable urge
to be covered head to toe with it

then a sweet voice thru the screen door said
I’m gonna lay naked in the cool sheets for a few
and suddenly my irresistible thing
was no longer a question - I knew…
