Canis

Kick me
While I’m
Down
Sliding
My paws
On the sharp
Cobble
Ground
Howling
Alone
At the
Moon
Or whenever
I could
Mistaken
For it
Digging
Through the
Scraps
Joining
At the
Fork
Bearing the
Family name
Lopez
With a
Tail
Tucked
Between my legs
A loper
Without prey
To chase
Or to
Give
Wild
Domestication
Clawing at
The doors
Sniffing at
The damp
Grass
Tug on
My leash
As if
I’m not
Already
Following
I miss
The trees
The most
When I’m
Stuck
Howling
At a
Flickering
Lightbulb

Author's Note
Feral, yet to be trained out, with canines that have been shaven down. Burrowing in the hardwood floors. Feeling like a stray dog. The domesticated life, unrelenting restlessness. Give a dog a bone, clip my wings and sharpen my claws. Feeling unfulfilled.

(Canis is the genus under which dogs and wolves are categorized. Fun fact! My surname ‘Lopez’ is derived from lupus, meaning wolf! Just think thats cool idk lmao.)
