Tribute.
Could somebody explain it to me,`cos i don`t understand.
What`s the f**king use of a tribute band?
People making money out of other artists fame,
all it takes is a clever manipulation of the name.
Switch a couple of letters round in some amusing pun,
that wouldn`t be out of place on the front page of the sun.
Like, Slack Babbath,or Noasis,T rextacy,Think Floyd.
Iron on Maiden,theres a whole lot more,it gets me right annoyed.
It isnt just the names they use that causes me to moan,
its in the time it took to learn those songs ,they could have written their own.
I know that plenty love them,and some of them make it big,
but i`d rather see the real thing than some welder in a wig.
Many good bands are retired ,or dead,but thats just life,my friends,
we don`t need second rate impersonators,all good things must end.
It takes more than getting the chords right,to re -create a vibe,that certain something in performance,that brings an audience alive.
I think my main concern is i`ll be in a pub,one day
and some bastard on the stage will be doing the songs of Peter Andre.
So stop wasting all that talent,give us something you`ve written.
Spare us another bad Morrisey clone,or God forbid another Atomic Kitten.

... and I guess much of the fun is in the performer's head, Dave. Then there's generational crossover - who will pass the Abba baton of live performance on to the next kids, although I suspect it's all about ego massage(and money)ultimately. But you're right the whole tribute thing has been done to death and it's at the expense of new original ideas. An entertaining and thought provoking read.

Enjoyed your poem very much, Dave. It hit the nail right on the head. Liked the jaunty rhymes and agreed with the sentiments. My only worry is that if most people only played stuff they'd written themselves, the pub would probably be empty. Better perhaps a lively version of 'Honky Tonk Woman' than a fifteen-verse dirge of 'one we wrote ourselves' in E minor. :o)
