Paradise Lost
Two pieces of a broken dream
Left floating on a summer stream
A diamond waiting in despair
Beneath the liquid laissez-faire
Simple peace and aching need
Imperiled by a jealous breed
Little fragments lost in time
Forgotten details of their rhyme
A modest sum that leads to two
Became a whole that wasn't true
Maybe value isn't real
Or something we weren't meant to feel
Where has all the yearning gone?
It fleeted as a frightened fawn
That ran into the darkened wood
As if it's grace misunderstood
If nature gave us something strong
A jewel, a will, a sacred song
Then why is it what we've begun
Has left our paradise undone?
Left floating on a summer stream
A diamond waiting in despair
Beneath the liquid laissez-faire
Simple peace and aching need
Imperiled by a jealous breed
Little fragments lost in time
Forgotten details of their rhyme
A modest sum that leads to two
Became a whole that wasn't true
Maybe value isn't real
Or something we weren't meant to feel
Where has all the yearning gone?
It fleeted as a frightened fawn
That ran into the darkened wood
As if it's grace misunderstood
If nature gave us something strong
A jewel, a will, a sacred song
Then why is it what we've begun
Has left our paradise undone?
