how awkwardly we learned

a sonnet

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around
once in a while, you could miss it.”—Ferris Bueller
(Matthew Broderick) in Ferris Bueller's Day Off

was it not yesterday we played hopscotch,
and scrambled up the sweetwood tree, to watch
the pea doves coif their nests and lay their eggs,
and hide their little ones between their legs?

serenity slept at the river’s edge,
oblivious to random plea and pledge
our childhood passions wove into the dreams
we cherished, like fleet ripples in the streams.

how awkwardly we learned to stop and stare,
as hips grew wide and bosoms pierced the air,
of girls we used to carry on our backs,
whose new disdain chagrined our manly lacks!

where boys and girls of yesterday once played,
fine lords and ladies flame life’s promenade.
