to walk on water

“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.”
—Suzy Kassem

more than a puddle,
bearing fleet feet like steppingstones;
more than a puzzle,
a mystery that melts my bones:
to walk on water
and not sink to the ocean floor.

no piscine slaughter,
death by aquatic carnivore.

peter’s bright cunning
dares him to brave the saline streets;
too soon too stunning,
his heart flip-flops a thousand beats:
to walk on water
and not sink to the ocean floor

no alma mater
would risk, although her sense be poor.

Sovereign Creator,
Whose voice brings forth the oceandepths;
the Elevator
of feet that fumble in their steps:
to walk on water
and not sink to the ocean floor—

what a disaster,
without Your Hand so swift and sure!
