The Unfortunate Child

There once was a little girl named Abigail Browning
Her parents were quite wealthy & kind
She had a doll whose name was Ashley
One day her father, a colonel in the army was ordered to go to Southeast Asia
Several months later he was killed in a native attack
Abigail's mother fell into a deep depression that proved fatal
Her only relative was an aunt, who just recently drowned on a beach at Coney Island
Abigail Browning was left in the hands of the family lawyer
He immediately placed her into a boarding school
Sadly, she was punished by the teacher for things she hadn't done
Ashley the doll was torn piece by piece by the other pupils
During the day Abigail hid as much as possible
At night she would lay in bed crying for her parents
One day she couldn't take it anymore, she jumped the wall and fled from the school
Shortly thereafter, she lost consciousness and dropped to the pavement
A mousy looking man came and took her only possession,
A locket with her parents pictures inside
Another man from the opposite direction carried her off
He brought her into a low, seedy place
He sold her to a drunken brute
Abigail Browning was put to work making artificial flowers
They fed her scraps and dirty tap water
Every so often the brute would have these terrible flashbacks
Abigail's eyesight began to fail quickly
With that said, her father, who wasn't dead after all, returned home
Each day he used his automobile and motored through the streets looking for her
The brute had one to many disillusions and went off his head
Abigail, now practically blind, ran into the street
She was struck down by a car
It was her father's car
Her father got out of the car to look at the child
She was so frail and unkempt, he didn't recognize her
She died in his arms
