Image for the poem If You

If You'd Know Me

*
Along the sun dappled trail
Among the hardwood and the pines
Mountain laurel blooms
Burbling streams echoing
Over slick, wet rocks
And the outward bends that catch the breeze
Making the rustle of leaves
Sound like rain
Hedging out crops where you can see
Foothills rolling away
Like waves

I start early
Before crowds clamor the trail
Echoing noise
Up and down
There's a deep here that calls my soul
Nature speaks
And my heart listens
To the whisper of the green
Living
And forgotten things
And dreams

I've watched hawks soar here
Circling
Sailing the sky
Wind riders
My brothers
Sometimes
Distant specks

There's more to life then parking lots
And suburban plots
I wish you could see it through my eyes
Far from traffics stop and go
City lights
And empty noise

Lay beneath the stars at night
And contemplate the depth of heaven
Life's meaning
Or just dreaming
Cool off beneath the waterfall
Still cold to summers warm
Just wander
Roam
Off the beaten path
Just go
Lose the cell phone signal
I've not much use for phones
I seek a deeper connection
I go to find myself
Among the moss and stones
Some roots run deep
Some souls do too
