I Remember
I remember that we were young when we met.
We didn’t know about love or hurt back then.
We were just together because we wanted to be.
I remember all those times we would play together;
We would wrestle and make mud pies.
We were only little kids, we didn’t know anything.
I remember that night you came over,
Because I was scared of the storm outside.
Our parents didn’t know you came over,
You stayed and hugged me in the dark.
There was no love there, you we only being nice.
I fell asleep that night wrapped in your arms.
I remember that time when we were down by the lake.
We sat side by side watching the sunset.
We talked about our first kisses,
How they just didn’t feel right to us.
We both looked at each other deeply,
Then I kissed my best friend.
I remember that day that you told me something.
We lay in my backyard and stared at the stars.
When the stars twinkled and danced,
You turned and looked over to my pale face.
You got closer to my cold body,
And in my ear whispered you loved me.
I remember that day when I got the bad news.
I was sitting on my lawn in the cold New Jersey air.
A big truck came from around the corner,
And stopped in front of your house.
A big man stepped out of his car,
And stuck a huge for sale sign in the grass.
I remember that last night together.
We were sitting in the park on the swings.
Our hands were interlocked together,
And our lips slowly kissed each other.
Someone called your name,
And I watched our hands tear apart.
I remember that letter I wrote to you.
It was covered in hearts and drops of tears.
I let my pen spill onto the page,
And the letter started out as,
I remember that we were young when we met.
We didn’t know about love or hurt back then.
