The Golden Rule

A tenant of most religions…is the Golden Rule

Recently, a poetess made a nice comment on my Mother’s Day poem. She made reference to honoring Mother Nature; of which the comment struck me as interesting. It made me to think of Earth Day which is celebrated on April 22 each year. Which in turn, took me down a path of convoluted thought, rather broad in perception and introspective. I stumbled across a quote attributed to Chief Dan George -“We are as much alive as we keep the Earth alive.” Thus, bringing me back full circle to where I began. It is there, with the realization of my destination to be with the Golden Rule. Chief Dan George (born Geswanouth Slahoot) was a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation located in British Columbia, Canada. He was an accomplished actor, musician, poet and author. His connection here, is to the Golden Rule poster.

I am reading an article by Leslie Gabriel Mezei titled “The Golden Rule Poster - A History”. In his article he starts with the September 11 attack on America. As I read, two passages strike at the heart of my thought…

The first, “This is supposed to be an age of increasing acceptance of diversity, of interfaith dialogue. Obviously, we haven’t universally applied the millennia-old Golden Rule, which urges us to treat everyone in our human family generously, even our enemy.”

The second passage seems to me to be the crux of the entire article…Paul McKenna (the creator of the poster) posits, “It’s only in self-transcendence that we become fully ourselves, fully human.” The article is a very interesting read.

Often when I am in thought; I turn to music to extract meaning and emotion unto my written words. In this case; instead of poem, my thought is in simple commentary here. However, the process is pretty much the same.

The 1st passage referenced, Billy Joel - Two Thousand Years
The 2nd passage referenced, Neil Young - Heart of Gold

Chief Dan George - “We are as much alive as we keep the Earth alive”
Perhaps the Golden Rule is passage; wisdom unto the true meaning of life.
