Desire

Sunday school drifted away as he looked at her. She was his forbidden fruit. He wanted her more than anything else in this world. His mind was transported to fantasy. He wanted her to relax in the bath. He ran warm water in the clawfoot tub. He poured in some Madagascar vanilla, seasoned it with coriander and lime; cedar, sandalwood, and exotic spices from far away lands until it smelled like a thousand flowers from the garden of Eden.
Suddenly someone was calling his name. "Adam, I'll ask you again, what was the first sin?" asked the preacher. "Desire." he answered. "Desire for forbidden fruit." He looked at her as he spoke, "Desire to put their lips upon it, to feel the juice running down a forearm and drip from an elbow."
"So now" the preacher said, "we have the knowledge of good and evil. What does that mean for us Adam?"
Everyone turned and looked at him to hear what he would say next. The girl looked at him and he looked straight into her eyes and said, "We can't have what we desire, not even if it is the one thing we want the most."
The preacher moved on, "And who was the serpent in the book of Genesis?" But Adam and the girl remained eyes locked on one another until she finally turned away.
Adam returned to fantasy trying not to focus on her naked body as he washed and rinsed her hair. She stepped out of the tub and he dried her off with a towel. He had just finished and was sharing a smile with her when the preacher said, "So, all sins can be summed up as lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. That's all the time we have for today. We'll pick up where we left off next week, Lord willing."
Everyone got up and slowly made their way out of the classroom. Adam was the last to leave. He had watched her every detail as she had stood up and left. He'd hoped that she'd look back at him before she left, but she didn't.
Forbidden fruit, lust of the flesh, where was the serpent now?
Who was seeking whom they may devour?
Man and woman.
Desire.
Sin had come into the world.
