The ghost of flowers

I cut some flowers today
roses to make the house smell pretty
but I could feel them dying
oozing life
and withering by slow degree
The same way our relationship died
in agonizing adagio
we saw it coming
working to keep our love alive
It takes a long time for love to wither
even longer
when you deny it's dying
six months living with a ghost
I'd turn my back and feel you near
but you'd already left
so I knew we were haunted by the ghost of love
then I'd weep
and throw the dying flowers out
