I SAW HER RIDE (LADY GODIVA BY PEEPING TOM)

I saw her ride,
legs to one side,
nothing to hide
amid the street,
while the discreet
let not eyes meet.

Her long thick hair
covered her, bare,
to derriere.
She sat upright
in the dim light
as day met night.

No more I saw -
my eyes went sore
sight did withdraw.
I'd been struck blind,
things could not find.
Guilt seared my mind.

Author's Note
An imagining of the moment Peeping Tom was struck blind for watching Lady Godiva ride naked through Coventry, England, as a protest against the taxes her husband Earl Leofric had raised. The story is a tradition, rather than a proven historical event., which has died hard in the folklore of Coventry. (Picture by Cmglee from wikipedia, of the Godiva statue in that city by William Reid Dick..)
