bloomin' sacrifices

the fate of fallen flow'rs
a sonnet

“A flower’s appeal is in its contradictions—so delicate in form yet
strong in fragrance, so small in size yet big in beauty, so short in
life yet long on effect.”—Terri Guillemets

cut flow'rs are part of adam's fallen race:
today they bloom, tomorrow losing face,
wind-dancing in the fragrant morning light,
ere comatose they waste in vasen plight.

the hand that culls them is the sword of fate,
the withering, as man's brief days abate;
the seeds that fall, the progeny of love,
the blossoming, as blessings from above.

the sacrifice of cut flow'rs is the Cross
the garden suffers, in his cruel loss;
the broken stems and bowed heads are the grave,
beyond which shines the triumph of the brave.

how beautiful, how sweet, the fated flow'r,
that man may cherish life e'en one brief hour!

AI Summary
The sonnet "Bloomin' Sacrifices" reflects on the fleeting nature of cut flowers, which bloom today and wither tomorrow. The act of cutting them is likened to the sword of fate, as they slowly die in their vases. However, the seeds they produce are a symbol of love and blessings from above. The poem also draws a parallel between the sacrifice of cut flowers and the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. The garden suffers in his loss, but beyond it shines the triumph of the brave. Despite their short lifespan, cut flowers are cherished by man for their beauty and sweetness.
