Image for the poem Blessed

Blessed

“Sometimes I need only to stand
wherever I am to be blessed.” (Mary Oliver)

And so this morning I stand naked before my three-way mirror
thankful for loves found and lost, or at least recognized in their passing.

Life is too important and singular to be lived without questions.
What is my purpose? Am I unique? What of me will remain after death?

Mother used to say, "We're only issued one body so we'd better enjoy it."
Are these gifts of the flesh merely for our temporal pleasure? Mother would say,
"If that's all, it would be enough." Then she'd wink and say, "But that's not all, is it?"

I wish one of these mirrors still held my mother’s image!

Author's Note
This was written before I confessed my affair and pregnancy to Shane. Another lover filled the void but now he's gone. If anything, my natural urges are increasing with pregnancy and my real estate work is becoming more consuming. I wish mother were here to help me through these times.
