On I-95 South

We have a pact.
I will stay behind you and you will lead me.
I do not know if we are going the same distance
but I trust you.

It is busy out here and everyone has found their partners.
I choose you, man in the white car
Bumper sticker says ‘baby on board’
so, you could never mislead me.

The silhouette of your hair resembles
A somewhat frantic lifestyle
yet 5mph over the speed limit seems tame
to me.

A while has passed at a mediocre pace
in the constant stream of metal, right
I swing.

you glance back, betrayal
I sink, guilt overtakes.
Sorry, sorry I mumble to myself
I slip back, left
where I belong.

I raise my hand, nodding.
This is the best apology I could give you.
Now we are back to our normal agreement
You trust me a little less
And I am not sure why, but I trust you more.

Who are you,
where are you going,
what is your name,
does the baby on board have a name,
how much longer will you lead me?

I scan the road, briefly
I see my opportunity, I take it.
I swoop into a tight space, in between
the blue car, silver car

Our cars become parallel for a split second
The dash board illuminates your face
blue tone. I see you now.
speeding up, I pass you.

Your white car is quickly fading into dark
I look back checking that you are still there.
I hope you make it to where you are going
but this was always a race, and now I have won.
