Image for the poem spike

spike

seeking solace in twilight's haze
in dire gloom glean wanton need
I will out the night wiling away my thoughts
who in dreaded desire do spike

incessant chatter be damned
the matter means little
if the depths of sorrow are fathomless
in quiet's keep I am alone

never lonely for the company of another
my solitude broken by riotous heckling from my alter ego
who jests about my ridiculously solemn nature

to the point of contention
I rather like the wisdom imparted
by a jaded character shining my greed back to me

suffering petty insults by a jackal of my own making
who takes my masochism seriously
cutting wit bites my pride
and alters my mood beautifully
