Old Tractors
I know old places
Soul seared under years of southern suns
Two lane roads and pines
And fields where cotton grows
Red clay and deep roots
God, family, country
Deep
To some love's about the falling
But there's a deeper here for me
It needs new words
Understandings
In the evening late
'fore the sun has set
Taking the edge off the swelter
And the day just lays hot
Quiet as the moment 'fore the fiddler places his bow
Sometimes the breeze will stir
And spirits revive
The moon rising with the sun still in the sky
Such times need the scent of honeysuckle among the pines
And you
My momma's people were farmers
Country with a drawl
Down to earth
I know sunrise and sunsets over fields of soybeans and corn
Raising hogs and chickens
Small country churches
Gravel where the black top ends and dirt roads begin
Fast cars, pickup trucks
And old tractors
You remind me of Bobby Collin's daughter
The farm down the road from grandma's
When I was tongue tied, young, and shy
You remind me of the tide of my soul which calls me back
Love echoing from a world I've left yet found again
With words I still don't know how to tell
Reminders. Reminders. Everything speaks to me of you
You shade my thoughts and dreams with colors
Making my world your own
And I wonder if I color your world too
Do I travel that winding two lane road
Through the pines and fields to where you are
Is that piece of country nowhere you call home
The destination of my life's journey
Are you the destination of my life's journey
No matter where that is
Can I rediscover me in discovering the you
I'm only beginning to know
I stand at a line of questions
Your eyes dare me to cross
Grandma could never put enough sugar in the sweet tea
To get me to like it
But I've had a sip or two of 'shine
That hit almost as hard as you
Sometimes late at night
Alone
I can almost hear your voice
And wish you were here
So I could draw you close
I just want to be in your arms again
And for now, that's answer enough
Soul seared under years of southern suns
Two lane roads and pines
And fields where cotton grows
Red clay and deep roots
God, family, country
Deep
To some love's about the falling
But there's a deeper here for me
