BAD ADVICE

some go for beer
or whiskey's shine
but some just think
it more refined
to sip a glass
or two a day
of merlot, port,
or chardonnay

dry or sweet
and on the rocks
by the bottle
or the box
wine can fuel
the poet's pen,
quell the critic's
voice within
and set the writer's
spirit free
to bumble through
a verse or three

just tip the glass
on those long nights
when you settle
down to write,
relax and let
the muses play,
hear what bacchus
has to say
and don't forget
old papa's take --

write drunk and edit
when you wake

Author's Note
I just read, after writing this, that Earnest Hemingway never said "write drunk, edit sober," though the phrase is attributed to him. He always wrote sober, says his daughter, in early morning, which may be all I have in common with Earnest Hemingway. So I don't know where the phrase came from. Bad advice anyway.
All writing remains the property of the author. Don't use it for any purpose without their permission.
