ARE THEY EQUAL?
ARE THEY EQUAL?
One carries on his aching back
a heavy tree trunk of great weight
approaching that unfathomed depth.
He needs two steps to bridge that fall.
But these two steps will send him down
where no one can see him again.
Without being safe, he builds that bridge;
he does not reach the other edge.
But that rich side is where hope lives
and all the people thank that man.
He's lived and died with that sweet dream.
The others relish what he's done.
Some take those steps and sacrifice
themselves not looking down but forth.
How can some people live to give
while others shamelessly receive?

Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
"One carries on his aching back
a heavy tree trunk of great weight"
So there are heavy tree trunks that are not of great weight? Doesn't heavy mean "of great weight". If so then "of great weight" is redundant and should be removed.
"approaching that unfathomed depth.
He needs two steps to bridge that fall."
"that fall" is a deictic expression that raises the question "Which fall?" and in remaining unanswered, leave a reader confused as to what you are referring to. Poor writing.
And one does not "bridge"** a fall. One forestays, avoids, disrupts, is saved from, a fall it. But one does not bridge it.
And where is "the other one" (of whom, according to your title,, the one carrying the heavy tree trunk of great weight is compared) described? So far as I can see, he/she isn't, and thus without this, the question you raise with your title cannot be answered.
**bridge2 ●○○ verb [transitive]

The differences between our two cultures can be bridged if we continue to communicate.

Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
This is all very curious.
You say in this all tell no show deixis laden piece that "the others" (who are they?) relish what you note your trunk bearer has done. But you also say that your trunk bearer fails to reach the other side of a gap he wants to bridge and instead falls into depths to never be seen again..
So these "others" relish failure?

Very dear Baldwin,
I am really surprised. How can you ask such questions whose answers are given before or after the words you are asking questions about.

Re: Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
They are not given in your text.
Where is my question about whether the expression "of great weight" is a redundancy if you've already noted that trunk your trunk bearer carries is heavy answered in your text?

Baldwin, are all tree trunks of the same weights? Here l am talking about a heavy one. Please, Baldwin, don't write about nonsensical things not worthy to be answered.
Re: Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
So a "heavy tree trunk" is different from a "heavy tree trunk of great weight"?
Why not just say "a tree trunk of great weight"?
"I am really surprised. How can you ask such questions whose answers are given before or after the words you are asking questions about.
I think you should note that I didn't ask a question about the word :bridge". I said
"And one does not "bridge"** a fall. One forestays, avoids, disrupts, is saved from, a fall. But one does not bridge it. "
which is an observation of how you do not understand what the verb "bridge" means and about how it is not to be used if you intend to make sense when using it.
So you not only write poorly. You do not understand the nature of things written to you.

Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
Given your title, this assertion"
"One carries on his aching back
a heavy tree trunk of great weight
approaching that unfathomed depth."
creates the expectation that you will assert what "another will do. But not only do you not say who the person being compared with "the tree trunk carrier" is. You do not specify what this "other" is doing.
And without this information, it is impossible to answer your question of whether or not, let alone in what way, "they" are (or are not) equal to the "tree trunk carrier".
If you think I am wrong in saying that this information is nowhere to be found in your submission, please do not just assert that I m wrong (let alone accuse me without evidence that I am too dense to see that it is plainly there). Point me to the lines in the text of your submission in which this information is provided.
Cue the red herring and the ad hominem filled replies.

Re: Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
Those deixis-filled lines are about the tree trunk carrier, not the person who may or may not be his equal. The antecedent of the masculine pronouns within them is the carrier and no one else.

The equal is the person who uses the bridge for his shameful purposes. Is it possible you don't understand? The bridge has been made by who has sacrificed his life and used by beneficial people.
Re: Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
But here:
"But these two steps will send him down
where no one can see him again.
Without being safe, he builds that bridge;
he does not reach the other edge."
you say that he fails to reach the other side of the chasm. So he is not successful in crossing the bridge. And, more importantly, there is no reference, let alone a clear one, to anyone crossing a bridge for shameful purposes.
Is it possible that you have not written what you think you've written?

One carries on his aching back
a tree trunk of great weight.
(though what his purpose is
in doing this is hardly clear).
Another person skates along
unburdened for his ease's sake.
He thinks that suffering for other men
is something foolish to up take.
The first one gives his life
to make all mankind safe.
The second lives to rake rewards from men
and doesn't give their fate a shake.
Are they of equal measurement
to be our source of joy?
Depends, I think, on who it is
you'd like to be employed.

Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
Can't you write a few words and deal respectfully with the others? I am not going to read this..........?
I've read only the first what's supposed to be a stanza.
I've read only the first what's supposed to be a stanza.
Re: Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
Why would it not be a stanza? It fits the definition of what a stanza is:
"Definitions from Oxford Languages ·
stan·za
noun
a group of lines forming the basic recurring metrical unit in a poem; a verse. "
It is a group of metrical lines. What's more, it is grammatically sound and what it says is intelligible.
Perhaps the reason you question whether it is a stanza is that you don't know what the characteristics of a stanza are.
In any case, my submission is far more clear than yours is on who it is that's being asked about regarding whether two persons are equal.
And what words have I disrespected? In what way have I done so? And how do you know that I did disrespect words if you haven't read beyond my submission's first stanza?

Hello there
There’s very little equality in life, that I do know for sure. But I think this poem reminds us how there is so little equality in all things whether we care to admit that or not. I think part of living is learning how to surf the imbalance.
Thank you for reminding us that there is still hope to be found.

But this piece isn't about equality, or the lack of it, in life. It's (supposedly) whether two particular people are equal -- though in what it doesn't give us any concrete information.

Well if it doesn’t give us any concrete information, then how do you know. I believe that’s the concept of metaphor. Try it sometime.

Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
"Well if it doesn’t give us any concrete information, then how do you know [sic ?]
How do I know what? That the submission doesn't give us the information necessary to answer the question of whether the things or people that the tree trunk carrier s being compared with are his equal? It's because there's no statement in the submission that denotes or describes who or what these things or people do or have done or what their aims are.
"I believe that’s the concept of metaphor."
The "concept of metaphor"?? Is there such a thing? How does one use a "concept of metaphor" rather than a metaphor when writing poetry?
More importantly, it appears that you don't understand what the aim of using a metaphor is. It's to make something that is quite clearly spoken of more concrete and vivid. It has nothing to do with not describing something.
"A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison."

"Nay, lad.
… Have you ever heard the term mood hoover?"
Yes, I have.
"Mood hoovers are individuals that bring negativity and a host of other bad traits to your team. They suck the mood out of others and can contribute to poor morale, low performance, a toxic blame culture, mistrust, and a lack of cooperation across a team.
Perhaps you will show me -- if you are implying that I am one such person (even though you'd be hard-pressed to show that I possess a mood hover's characteristics rather than being one who legitimately challenges false claims and demonstrates with valid arguments and warranted evidence the inadequacies of things claimed to be well crafted) -- why you think an ad hominem, rather than an actual and articulate demonstration of why my remarks above are off base, is a fitting and response to my critique of your ill-informed claims. Attacking the person who makes remarks rather than showing that his/her remarks are not true is the mark of someone who is incapable of making a valid case against them.
"… How about morale vacuum? "
Why should I have heard this term? A google search shows that it is not used anywhere.
***What are the characteristics of mood hoovers?
One of the overriding characteristics of a mood hoover is that they are emotionally draining and exhausting to be around, and to interact with. They may also show some or all of the following:
They moan. Legitimate grievances or concerns are fine, but mood hoovers constantly moan to whoever will listen. They moan about working conditions, their workload, fellow team members, management, computer systems, customers, suppliers. Anybody or anything.
This sucks other people into their world of negativity and cultivates an atmosphere of dissatisfaction within an organisation, regardless of whether it is justified or not.
They blame others. A mood hoover won’t accept responsibility for their own failures and may try to blame someone or something else for missed deadlines, poor performance or conflicts.
Naturally, if they’re unable to take responsibility then that means that somebody else must. This breeds resentment and ill-feeling between staff and by preventing members of your team working effectively together, will ultimately lead to decreased performance across the entire team.
They’re always the victim. As a natural consequence to blaming others, they become the victim. If a mood hoover is unable to blame somebody else for their failure, you’ll notice they quickly pivot to pointing out the unreasonable behaviour or actions of another as an excuse. Again leading to divisions and conflict within a team. You may also notice that mood hoovers are overly dramatic and make mountains out of mole hills.
They’re unmotivated, unwilling and uncaring. Mood hoovers can affect your organisation with a lack of motivation, attention to detail, and a lack of care about the consequences. These negative traits can easily transfer to others, especially if people see them getting away with it.
It’s important to remember that mood hoovers are not necessarily bad people, and they may not show all of these traits at once, but if you start spotting these on a regular basis within your organisation then you may need to act.

So once again you show yourself unable and ill-equipped to produce articulate,, well informed, and relevant responses to warranted critiques of the things you say and the claims you make, but only snarky jibes at those who show that you may not know what you are talking about.
Thanks for confirming my suspicions about your capacity for dealing as an adult with valid criticism let alone for being able to recognize what good writing looks like and how it is to be set out..

Why the question mark?
"Enjoy that half an hour of your life you just wasted."
The only reason it was a waste of time was because I was doing what Twain and others advised me against when they said
"Never Attempt To Teach a Pig To Sing; It Wastes Your Time and Annoys the Pig"

Very dear Missy,
You are right. You understand my poem very well. Where is the equality between the person who sacrifices himself and dies to offer what is good and useful not to himself, but to all people, and that or those who use what he has offered in such a mean and selfish way? Please, Missy keep in touch. I like to read the opinions of good poets, who can understand the real meaning of a poem. J.Z.

"Where is the equality between the person who sacrifices himself and dies to offer what is good and useful not to himself, but to all people, and that or those who use what he has offered in such a mean and selfish way?"
Where may one find in your submission an actual description of something ("that who [sic]") or anyone who used what your trunk bearer has done (selflessly for others) in mean and selfish ways, let alone what the nature of these "mean and selfish ways was?
The closest you come to it is here:
"How can some people live to give
while others shamelessly receive?"
which only raises, but does not in any way answer, a **question** that is based upon the question-begging and wholly false premise that people cannot live to give if and when."others" are involved in "shameless receiving" And it hardly shows that any thing or anyone is employing the ways that the tree trunk bearer created in mean and selfish ways.
Your submission does not come anywhere near saying what you claim it says - i.e, that there are things or people who are using the bridge that your trunk bearer has built for their own mean and selfish ways, let alone what the substance of these mean and selfish ways are so that a reader can see how and why those who perform them are unequal in character to your tree trunk bearer -- and it does not deal with the subject you think it deals with (i.e. whether the latter is "equal" in any particular, but unstated, way with the former) -- let alone in any truly linguistically felicitous way
And why would you even raise, let alone not answer, the question of whether something or anyone who did act in these ways would be "equal" to one who did not engage in mean and selfish actions towards others?. What purpose does raising the question serve, especially since the answer to it is already apparent?

Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
I watched my son
when he was born
so shamelessly receive
while at his mother’s breast
her milk.
And there was ne'er
a question raised
about the how (or why)
she lived to deed
her milk away
when all that he
exhibited
was greed.
So when it’s asked
(as it is asked above)
just how it is
that certain (many) people chose
to body generosity
despite the fact
the world is full
of selfishness
and enmity,
the answer's “they
abide in love”.

Baldwin,
Why do you interfere between Missy and me. Perhaps, In your opinion she doesn't have the right to comment on joseph Zenieh's poetry. What kind of person are you? Can you tell me? Is this your job in life? You want to contradict everybody.

"Why do you **interfere between" [sic] Missy and me. [sic ?"]"
This is a public forum. Questionable comments and ad hominems made on it deserve to be responded to. And I'm not "interfering between" [a solecism] you two. Nothing I have said prevents you two from talking to each other.
"Perhaps, In your opinion she doesn't have the right to comment on joseph Zenieh's poetry."
Have I ever said such a thing? My opinion on this matter is that comments should be accurate, literate, properly punctuated, grammatically sound, and based on a true perception of what you are attempting to talk about in your submissions..
"What kind of person are you?"
The same as you, i.e., one who thinks sloppy writing, false claims, misunderstandings of what words mean and how they are to be used, and misrepresentations of facts that are posted on a public forum should be corrected
The only difference between you and "missy" on the one hand and me on the other is that I don't use ad hominems when my claims are challenged and I have no evidence to back them up
But the real question is: Why do you not show how and why the comments I've been making about the coherence and comprehensibility of, and the poor quality of writing within your submission, (which BTW, are designed to help you avoid the mistakes you make and, if taken into account, would help you become a better poet) are not apt and not warranted if you think they are not?

Baldwin,
1-Without becoming a better poet, l drove you mad with jealousy. If l become better, what will happen to you?
2- What is the solecism you are talking about. Tell me to show you that you are mistaken.

"1-Without becoming a better poet, l drove you mad with jealousy."
Oh, what silly things you say in order to preserve your ego!
" If l become better, what will happen to you?"
According to you, I'd become even more jealous than I supposedly (but without any supporting evidence from you) already am!
"2- What is the solecism you are talking about. [sic ?]."
If you can't see it, I'm not about to tell you. And here I thought you were a poet.

Re: Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
"Interfere between" is an unusual and awkward expression especially when compared with the frequency with which phrases like "interfere in" and" interfere with" are used to suggest some sort of disruption.
In any case, since "interfere" means "prevent (a process or activity) from continuing or being carried out properly", I did not do what you claim I did. And what you should have said if your claim were to be close to being true is that I was "interfering in/with the exchange that you and "missy" were having.".
Nor have you shown that I said or claimed that "missy" has no right to comment on your submissions.
Are you claiming that I have no right to comment upon "missy's" comments on your submissions, especially when they are full of misunderstandings of what your submissions are all about, or upon my comments, especially when "her" comments are poorly worded, untrue, unsubstantiated, and full of ad hominems?

Baldwin,
1- It is better to say interfere in or with, but we can also use in some cases interfere between.
2- Sorry, Baldwin, but how can we use a name with a small letter? "Missy"

"It is better to say interfere in or with, but we can also use in some cases interfere between."
It may be. But the problem is that you haven't provided any evidence that this is one of those cases.
" Sorry, Baldwin, but how can we use a name with a small letter? "Missy"
In the same way you used your name with a small letter when you wrote "... In your opinion she doesn't have the right to comment on joseph Zenieh's poetry"
(cue the editing of this orthographical mistake)
And I didn't interfere in with or between you and "Missy". The most I did was to point out that what "Missy" said concerning what your piece was about was untrue. I did not stop you from having an exchange with "Missy" or with "Missy" having one with you..

You have deep insights, Joseph! It seems to me you have been on the path of humbleness.
I sometimes have the urge to read your poetry to soothe me.

Oh come now, is it true
a verse or two
that contains the claim
that someone who
works for the betterment
of “man”
deserves one’s praise
displays an insight new or deep?
There is, however,
little doubt the way
this claim by J-Z’s phrased
upon the page
is soporific through
and through
and is quite guaranteed
when read when going to bed
will readers put to sleep.

Very dear Boyana,
Your encouragement is very important to me. I would love to read your frank opinion of my writing. It will give me a great push forward, especially after reading the criticism of a very jealous person, who interferes with me and any person who writes favourably about my poetry. Nearly all his poetry is about my writings. The other day, he attacked Missy because she wrote some encouraging words about my poetry, and now , he blames you for the same reason. He is waiting for any word of praise that comes to me in order to attack the writer and me. Does that signify anything to you? He is looking forward to damaging my reputation among the great poets of this group. Thank you very much, Boyana, for your encouragement. J.Z.

"Nearly all his poetry is about my writings"
I have made 351 submissions to DUP. I list below the submissions (271 of them) that in my eyes have **nothing to do** with anything you wrote. So unless you can show, and not just assert, that the majority of them are actually about or were "inspired by" things you have written, your claim is indeed a lie.
I also note the titles of the submissions I've made to DUP that are about or have been inspired by things you have posted there. (I've listed these below). Please show me, assuming that you are able to do so, how the named poems deface what you have written and do not " make what they are based on into something better, or at least something different.

Re. ARE THEY EQUAL?
"Nearly all his poetry is about my writings"
I am now wondering, J-Z, whether you are a graduate of the Donald J Trump School for repeatedly making utterly false and often refuted claims that do not have a shred of evidence to back them up and that have never been substantiated. You follow in his footsteps in continually making this claim and in finding ways to run away from proving its validity by specifically demonstrating that nearly all of my over 300 submissions to DUP are about (let alone imitate) your writings.
And BTW, even if it's true that nearly all my submissions are about (or are imitations of) yours, the question that should be raised is NOT what their source is, but whether these submissions of mine are any good. As T S Eliot noted, writing about what others have written about is common in poetry. There is nothing wrong in doing this. In fact,
“Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different."
Would you care to demonstrate with evidence that supports any claim that you might make that I have defaced anything I have (supposedly) "taken from you" and that I have not made what I have taken from you into something better, or at least something different.?
And as the record shows, I did not "attack" Missy because she wrote some encouraging words about your poetry,
I made the valid observation that her claims concerning what your submission was about was untrue. If anyone did any attacking, it was Missy upon me.
Nor did I interfere with your ability to write anything.
And I did not blame Boyana for anything, let alone her saying something nice about your submission.. I raised the question about whether her claim that the submission of yours above shows deep insight into anything.
In any case, I need not do anything to damage your reputation as a good poet. You do that yourself in the way you write.
