Food Memories: Spain

First meal
big bowl of chocolate flan
topped with Maria cookies
cooked by new Spanish friend
finest dish in his repertoire
best avoid his pancakes
made with a full cup of sugar

Creamy milk sold
In vacuum sealed bricks
with a shelf-life of
It never gets old
opened with scissors
Invariably splashing one’s face

In Barcelona grocery
spending more than
one thousand pesetas
winning free poultry
An entire plucked chicken
clueless how to part the bird
with only bread knife in the kitchen

Daily purchasing
many loaves of French bread
warm, fragrant
fresh from the oven
learning to eat like a spaniard
fork in one hand,
piece of bread in the other

Sidewalk kiosks selling delicious
cinnamon and sugar coated churros,
barbecued corn on the cob
newspaper cones filled with warm chestnuts

Perfecting lentil, garbanzo,
white bean stew with chorizo
purported to be better
than a Spanish mothers
cooked to this day
with a side of tortilla
the kind with eggs,
potatoes, and onions.
