False Spring

This day I watched a bumble bee
while spring proclaimed its worth
though winter sought to humble me
I've cheated frozen earth

Brave trees stand weary, tired and bare
their branches filled with sky
all too soon green buds will bloom
to gladden hearts and minds

But such stirring in the forest
brings sorrow to my eyes
when swept away to wither
on frost's unyielding tide

If only birds could sing in words
to warn them of their fate
when seasons now deluded
fall early or too late
