The Heart & The Mind

The Heart & The Mind-Pt 1

“This hurts so much,”
Heart whined,
“Maybe we should just keep trying.”
“I don’t know about you,”
Brain stated calmly,
“Every time you do, you wind up back home crying.”
“But he said he loved me,
And he says it all the time…”
Brain rolled her eyes…

Here we bare witness to Heart vs Mind.

“If he did he’d be here,
If he did he’d respect you.”
Brain told Heart,
“It only FEELS like love,
It only FEELS special.”
“But it must be!”
Heart argued…
“I’ve never felt it so much!”

Brain reasoned, “Give it time,
Please don’t rush,
But you have to learn the difference between attachment & love.”
Heart took a minute,
Before she spoke again,
“How could everything have been so right in the beginning?
Why do I ache,
Why did I ever meet him?”
Brain paused,
And gave Heart a moment,
Before she posed a question:
“What is love to you?
If you don’t mind me asking.”

Heart sighed,
Weary of another one of Brain’s little tests…
Then she told her
“Love is patient, kind & compromising…
And a place where one truly can rest..,”
Then she paused,
As Brain cut in:
“Now tell me,
Do any of those things describe him?
I warned you when you met…
And I warned you during,
I told you to get out,
Or he’s gonna bring great suffering.”
Heart took it in…
And Brain felt the page start to turn,
While Heart’s memories blurred by,
One by one,
They all burned…
“See the moments We shared,
Some were wonderful,
But you’ve still gotta learn…
A man giving you attention
Does not equal a Heart earned.”

And Heart listened while she spoke,
And then she began to recall,
So many disappointments,
Broken promises,
How he so often dropped the ball…

But the beat from her core,
It still didn’t go away,
So she asked quietly:
“What if he comes back some day?”
“If he does, then he does,
And we’ll deal with that when it comes,
But right now you have to beat for you,
Because you see he’s not the one.”

Brain was all logic,
While Heart was emotion,
But Brain was getting fed up
With Heart being broken.
