New Year's Eve
On this new year's Eve
We lay on each other's side
Our fingers entwine
As we hold each other's hand
Tonight is different
From the other new year's Eve
We had before 2023
The festive mood is absent
We are both pensive
Lost in thought as we think
About our son sleeping on the next room
Who just had his first acquaintance with alcohol
Both of us were shocked
To see him in a state of intoxication
We never expected him to take a sip of alcohol
And this is the first time that we have to deal with it as parents
We feel angry at the people who let him drink
And I'm disappointed at my son
For being so naive and weak to refuse the drink
But at the same time I feel pity
Seeing him in a sorry state
We feel sorry for him
For being taken advantage of
Though he is seventeen already
He is still a child trying to be an adult before us
We want to protect him from bad influences around him
But we realized that
The older he grows he will discover things on his own
And we can only guide him and remind him of the things he need to avoid in life
And let him know that he is loved
No matter what

We started letting our girls have a drink at home when they were 14/15 hoping to teach them to enjoy just one and start to learn their limits in a safe space. It hasn't stopped the eldest (17) getting ridiculously drunk at a couple of parties when she was out of my sight. It's almost a rite of passage. I don't get it, but most of them seem to do it. She has now decided it's far better to have a drink or two than to overdo it and spend the next day throwing up. Fortunately for us (kind of) we're all unwell at the moment so nobody is going out and we'll have an early night! Good luck.

Thank you Ellie for the comment. This is his first time. He was out this evening for just more than an hour but I could not reach him so I went out to look for him and found him sitting in a dark corner looking weak and disoriented. I thought he was sick but when I smelled his breath that's when I knew he was drunk. We never drink at home and I find it upsetting to see him in that drunken state. I was more worried over the side effect on him. We watched him for hours while we let him sleep. We lost our appetite for the midnight meal on new year's eve. I think it's part of his growing up and I hope he learned his lesson from this episode.

Not the best environment for him to have his first drunken experience in, was it? I'm sure it wasn't much fun and he probably won't do the same again.

Yes. The company wasn't good. He had no intention to drink as I just asked him to do an errand for me and the place wasn't far from our house. Just a few meters away. I think they invited him for a shot and they just let him get drunk.

I’m sorry you had to deal with this rite of passage on a holiday. Not that any night in this state would be better but…I find your honesty about the situation so pure. The love and care and hopes and dreams for your child are so wonderfully crafted in between the lines of writing about the outcome of this particular incident. This aside, I wish you a Happy New Year and I hope you’ll be able to laugh about this at some point soon. H🌷

Thank you for your comment. I feel better now after a sleepless night. This was a different new year's Eve for us. I was able to sleep in the morning. Glad his hang over is gone after throwing up at dawn and I had to assist him and I think he had to try and go through the experience.

It is a tricky situation. I hope it's a long time until he gets into that state again. I understand your worry & feel for you.
